reviewed Paul Blart: Mall Cop ~9 months ago

To sit down and watch this film from start to finish would be like slowly feeding yourself through a meat grinder. This low brow comedy had potential if only from one individual...it's leading star. Otherwise, Mall Cop was doomed from inception from inept directing to atrocious writing. Where this film could have been funny it was dreadful to even swallow. You have Steve Carr, who's only decent directorial effort was 2000's "Next Friday" and just because Kevin James wrote for "The King of Queens" doesn't mean weekly episodic formulas would work on the big screen. Suffice it to say, while all over, this mangled 1 1/2 hour snore is quite horrendous, there is one positive thing I said aloud about Mall Cop...."my god I've reached the credits!"

Well, looking at the original and then watching the remake...it is a shame that this movie was even made. Not necessarily being an enemy of the current cavalcade of Hollywood films being pushed through the meat grinder for a second serving(some, but few, films have been of equal par or better than the original) this film's attempt @ re imagining a classic should have been called "The Day Keanu Stood Still". Poorly written and without any real surprises, this film bores from the get go and never lets up it's moribund tread to the end credits like walking through a dry flower bed for 90 minutes. Painful to see award winner Kathy Bates roll through this winner with an semi attachment that seems to cry silently "why did i sign up for this mess?", director Scott Derrickson did not inspire nor seem to even try to guide his actors passion or written lines into much more than at a brick wall. Being that everyone in this film seemed to have gone to "The Acting School of Keanu", this remake falls far flat from what it could have been: quite amazing.

reviewed Babylon A.D. ~10 months ago

Attempting to rejuvenate Vin Diesel's flailing Hollywood career, this post-apocalyptic actioner does attempt of course to accomplish this but the key word here is attempt. Not saying that he is not capable of being in great movies, it is just that this was not one of them. Including only a few talented actors(including a one Gerard Depardieu), Babylon A.D. had a good idea and amazing special effects but was quite choppy in direction and focus in regards to the flow of the characters and their development in the film. At no point does one feel much emotion for any character or drive for their goals in the movie nor does the film appear as no more that eye candy for science fiction fans. I must admit that I was so detached from the movie that started to fast forwarded half way through the film just to prevent myself from cringing any more during non action sequences. Avoid this bland genre entry and instead re watch some films that this attempts to congregate with: Blade Runner, 12 Monkeys, Logan's Run, The Road Warrior, and THX 1138 to name a few.

reviewed The Eye ~12 months ago

Allowing for drag time The Eye does have enough spark to make you want to jump under the covers a few times with that feeling of the creepies, but over all Danny Pang has had better fare than this twist on a newly sighted girl that...sees dead people. Angelica Lee is does a good job of accentuating the fear we all have of what is right behind us. Is there something behind me? Should I turn around? Can I? A good fright but could be scarier.
