Wolf's Rain, 2003

I am not sure how to write this one. If you can get past some sentimentality and the fact that wolves are able to walk around perceived as humans, you may like this even more than I did. The artwork, while not revolutionary, is actually quite ambitious. Though the movement of the animals are not perfect, the overall anime is close. If you are like me, and think that I really don't have time to watch cartoons anymore, there is a way to watch this in only the last three discs. That puts it at a runtime of about 4 or 5 hours for the whole story. I liked watching the whole thing minus the disc four summary, though discs 2 and 3 tend to avoid this quest they are on. The meaning of this story is not family friendly. I also think that it is not serious in that is tries to be a social commentary in the territorial conflicts or Nobles. It's just a classic reference to give these wolves some insurmountable odds. Indeed, it does seem to say that the pursuit of an average life is just not worth the trouble. I don't have these moral hang-ups, so I thought it had a beautiful message for those that take the trouble to affirm life. As a fantasy it is wonderful. I found myself impatient for the end only to see what the fates for these wolves would be. If you don't get the ending, understand this is your fault, and very un-Eastern of you.
