Wild Palms, 1993

Hideous melodrama. This is what happens when you try to do a cyberpunk soap opera with people who don't appreciate or understand the source material or who have no idea how to write a script. And I thought New Rose Hotel was horrid! This takes it to new lows. The acting, dialogue and plot were just completely vapid. The "synthiotics" and pseudo-reality generating machines were novel, but the whole political "fathers" and "friends" plot device was juvenile, idiotic and completely and thoroughly ridiculous and unbelievable. It was obviously trying to marry one part William Gibson (who made a neat cameo) with one part Lynch's Twin Peaks. Only imagine it done by a four year old with severe retardation who is addicted to soap operas and who had a frontal lobotomy. Avoid at all costs. This makes the film adaptation of Johnny Mneumonic look like Academy Award winning material.
