The Wire, 2002 - 2008

I'd like to write a critique on this "gritty" cops and robbers exercise, but the subject matter and characters do not admit of it: "The Wire" is an unresisting imbecility. Anyone who lives in a large urban area knows about the moronic street life which is sapping the vitality of America's cities. But enshrine it in prime time? I'd rather watch paint dry. I suspect the devotees of this dross who give it five stars live in the smug suburbs. It must thrill them to know what it is they've escaped. That motivates them, and, of course, a healthy dose of voyeurism. But if you're a person who aspires to quality entertainment and doesn't normally associate with people who talk trash every waking moment of their lives, leave this series alone.

This show is worth every minute of watching it. Like any series it many take the first couple of episodes to get into it, but once you do, you become hooked. There is always something new and different happening. As the attentive viewer, the producer's hints at so many small details, that only unravel themselves later and becoming very fulfilling for the attentive viewer.

I only watched the first disc and I must say that despite the great reviews of this series I was not overly impressed. It struck me as just another cop & criminal show with a twist. A twist that is not realy original. There was another show a few years ago on broadcast tv that showed the FBI vs the Mafia. It also featured one case per season and showed both sides of the story. It was better, IMO. I forgot the name of the show though. I think it was cancelled.

The greatest mark of shame for the Emmy awards is the fact that they never once recognized HBO's The Wire. Though the ride through the series is, at times, difficult and emotionally draining there is no doubt that it is a journey worth taking. The best TV series ever in my opinion.
