Profile of The Wire

The mood of The Wire is clever, tense, and sincere. The plot centers around drug dealing, fighting crime, and a police investigation. It is a crime, drama, and independent TV show. Stylistically, The Wire features realism, stars an ensemble cast, and is talky. In approach, it is serious and realistic. The pacing is slow. The Wire takes place, at least partly, in a police station. The setting is Maryland. It happens in contemporary times. The Wire is known for being a hit series, a masterpiece, and an award winner. Note that it includes brief nudity, drugs/alcohol, and sexual content.

Summary of The Wire

Unlike most television crime dramas, which neatly introduce and then solve a case all in the space of one hour, HBO's THE WIRE follows one single drug and homicide investigation throughout the length of an entire season. Centered on the drug culture of inner-city Baltimore, the series' storyline unfolds from the points of view of both the criminals lording the streets and the police officers determined to bring them down. Created by writer David Simon (THE CORNER, HOMICIDE: LIFE ON THE STREET), THE WIRE's multifaceted approach offers a nuanced overview of every aspect of the drug trade and the complex morality of its participants.

I'd like to write a critique on this "gritty" cops and robbers exercise, but the subject matter and characters do not admit of it: "The Wire" is an unresisting imbecility. Anyone who lives in a large urban area knows about the moronic street life...
Entertaining Education
The reason I LOVE this series as much as I do ... it's believable and educational. If I were a history teacher, I would use some of these episodes to help show what goes wrong when you have big government!
