The Chronicles of Narnia - The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, 1988

On the one hand, as other reviews mentioned, the effects are more than awful. On the other hand, this is a very faithful rendition of a wonderful book. However, in the end, I think the unsophisticated effects begin to actively detract from the movie by the end -- the combination not just fur-suit animals, but _bad_ fur-suit animals with not just animation, but _bad_ animation gets a little overwhelming, no matter how wonderful the rest of the movie is (and it is). I found myself praying that they would just _not try_ for another effect. And being disappointed every time. The cast was generally good, although quite young, however my initially charitable feelings evaporated about 2/3's of the way through, along with my charitable feelings about fur-suits and animation. It balances out to be a very good children's movie (Aslan is spectacularly well done), but with enough glaring holes to make a jaded adult cringe by the end of it.
