Profile of The Adventures of Pete and Pete

The Adventures of Pete and Pete can be described as offbeat, humorous, and witty. The plot revolves around suburban life, adolescence vs. adulthood, and an eccentric family. The main genres are comedy, family, and fantasy. In terms of style, it is surreal. In approach, it is not serious. It is set, at least in part, in the suburbs and in a small town. It takes place in the 1990s. It is well suited for kids, a family outing, and teens.

Summary of The Adventures of Pete and Pete

In the early 1990s, the children's cable network Nickelodeon produced a spate of television series that were funny, smart, and never pandered to--or insulted the intelligence of--its predominantly pre-teen audience. Originating as series of shorts that aired during commercial breaks and then expanded to a full-length show, The Adventures of Pete and Pete was one of Nick's most imaginative outings. The offbeat series chronicled the suburban adolescence of two redheaded brothers with the same name--older brother Pete (Mike Maronna) and younger brother Pete (Danny Tamberelli)--in a surreal town populated by an oddball assortment of characters, including a militant Girl Scout, a lovelorn schoolbus driver, a housewife with a steel plate in her head, and a spandex-sporting strongman (the hilarious Toby Huss). The series also featured inspired guest turns by eccentric figures like Michael Stipe, Steve Buscemi, Debbie Harry, Iggy Pop, Adam West, Janeane Garofalo, and even Hunter S. Thompson.
