Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, 2006

I wish there was more to this show. I liked Sports Night even though I wasnt much of a fan of Felicity Huffmans. I loved West Wing. Loved it. This is something else. You see the possibility, but it just didnt work as well. Who thought it was a good idea to give Matthew Perry the show? It would take a decade to work that Friends mugging out of his system, let alone a couple years. Its weird watching him learn dramatic acting by copying Brad Whitford, because it just turns into two Brads talking to each other. Then theres Amanda Peet whos kind of a female Tobey Maguire. Shes got 2 or 3 emotions, but theyre not annoying like Tobeys. They just dont always work for what shes given. I guess she was supposed to be a CJ Cregg-type. You could almost say the same for D.L. and Nate Corddry. West Wing spoiled us, because the cast was damn near perfect, down to the secretaries. This ones got holes. It all lives and dies with Matt Perry. You cant sell him. Not with this. It really really hurts the show that the skits arent that funny. It hurts worse, because Sarah Paulson, the fat guy and the nerdy guy are really funny. But you barely see them in skits. Instead you get Nate and D.L. I give it 4 stars, because it still surprises you like West Wing. It finds that happy intellectual sweet spot here and there every episode. But I defy you to claim this show couldve lasted. From the very first episode, there wasnt much of anything to hold onto. Wes Mendell was the best the show had, and he was gone in an instant, but even then, compare the Studio 60 pilot to the West Wing pilot. The focus isnt there, the casting is off and the stories dont have balance. But its Sorkin and thats still 4 stars, because sometimes, the ideas pay off.
