Profile of Oz
The mood of Oz is disturbing, bleak, and tense. The plot centers around prison life, an uninhibited rivalry, and imprisonment or confinement. It is a drama, thriller, and crime TV show. Stylistically, Oz is surreal, includes a voice over, and stars an ensemble cast. In approach, it is serious and realistic. It takes place, at least partly, in a prison. Oz happens in the 1990s and in contemporary times. The TV show is known for being a hit series, a modern classic, and controversial. It is especially suggested for a boys' night. Note that Oz includes strong sexual content, strong violent content, and drugs/alcohol.
Summary of Oz
The Oswald Maximum Security Prison has opened an experimental new ward reserved for especially dangerous criminals. This unit, Emerald City, focuses on rehabilitation, but the world inside is even more corrupt and violent than the mean streets where these inmates come from. Inside the walls there are also two sets of rules, those laid down by the warden and those understood by the racially divided prisoners. This HBO series is full of gritty, violent imagery and deftly handles sensitive issues about the American Justice System. Barry Levinson and Tom Fontana created the gritty series. The acclaimed cast includes Rita Moreno, B.D. Wong, Ernie Hudson, and Lauren Velez.
