North & South, 2004

A period drama that is romantic without being as twee as Jane Austin. The social drama that propels the story is an eye opener for anyone with idealistic visions of the Victorian age, and has a well balanced combination of starving children and sentimental attachments. The male protagonist, Mr. Thornton, is surprisingly sexy. While he may not be as dark as a Heathcliff, he makes the Mr. Rochesters and Mr. Darcys of the world look timid and feminine. He is actually multi-layered, he treats people badly, but he is endearing all the same. I did not find the actress who played Margaret to be as interesting. Elizabeth Gaskell's character seemed a lot more intellectual, but the actress in this series has a blank stare and a dopey sort of shyness that kind of undermines her dialogue.
