Great idea but too many plotholes
The story is great and exciting, it makes you want to see more. The casts are also good, and I don't see any problems with acting either. For me though, it's the amount of plotholes in the movie that is just too much. There are just too many "huh??!" moments that'are just frustrating. For example, you are searching for some clues on what your late father's research is about. You opened his laptop, looking for clues, but nothing after sometime. You then get upset, and throw the laptop to the floor, it breaks into peaces, and a small paper magically appear containing all the clues that you're looking for. Huh?
More: A nuke explodes several kilometers away. People see the flash, and simultaneously hear the bang. Huh? Hello, the speed of sound vs speed of light? -- You enter an organization to bring it down from the inside. Does it make sense to tell the organization that you intend to do that? -- Your arch enemy that you spend one season trying to eliminate appears in front of you, and he has lost all of his powers. He's asking for an injection to bring all his powers back. Does it make sense to give him the injection so he could recover all his powers and terrorize everybody again?
You'll notice these plotholes in season one, and it gets worse in season two. Haven't seen season three yet. Plus the appearance (and disappearance) of random people with special ability, which doesn't seem to contribute much to the story. The same with nested flashbacks (or time travel in this case). All in all it feels like the authors just went with the easy way to create the plot or solve problems with the story (and having heroes with arbitrary abilities at your disposal are handy for these), and that's disappointing considering that this could achieve a lot more. For me at least.

I liked this one for it's creative and imaginative originality but it wasn't take to it's height which was pretty disappointing. I liked it enough to be fairly disappointed that they cancelled it, however. I really wish they would've taken it a little bit farther. Peter and Sylar were my favorites for their being different, and especially Sylar or "Gabriel" for being evil but wanting somebody to accept him.

Season 1 and Sylar make this worth watching.
I have always been increadibly disappointed by Heroes, because even though it has a bold and imaginative premise, the first season is very watchable and the acting good from most, the writers never seemed to care enough about this show to do anything with it. They left it rife with plot-holes and unexplored stories, and had made it almost twee and banal by the end of the fourth season. A terrible shame, I was actually sad when they cancelled it, for what could have been.
I have still rated this quite high because it has moments of brilliance, particularly in the first and third seasons; and because of Zachary Quinto's turn as the murderous Sylar. He often carries whole episodes on the strength of his acting alone, and is always a joy to watch. It was painful to watch his final scenes in the fourth season, as the writers all but neutered his character, leaving him nothing to work with. Bad writers, no cookie!
In summation, watch the first season if you can, though it is a bit slow to start and improves a few episodes in. If you like it or a specific character enough to continue, do so with more pessimism than optimism and you'll be pleasantly surprised. Unless you are really into the show or Sylar, completely avoid the fourth season.

The story is fun, but the dialogue is banal. The latter wouldn't be such a liability if the actors were more exciting.
If you hate wasting time on mindless entertainment, skip Heroes. But if a bit of comic book nonsense makes you feel good--like a kid again--spend some time with the first few episodes and make up your own mind. It's not really that bad.

And the underlying back-story science (genetics and evolution) is as hilariously and melodramatically dumb in the same way comics would be. If you're looking for the interpersonal drama of Six Feet Under, or even Buffy, forget it. It's hard to care about these characters. And sure, it's junk food. But just try stopping when the bowl's right in front of you. I watched three episodes last night!

It starts to pick up after about 5 episodes. unfortunately if you don't watch the first few episodes you won't know what's going on, so stick with it. Most of the characters and their stories do get better. Except nikki, mica, and DL's story never becomes interesting or important, you should just fast forward through those parts because they almost never play a part in the bigger picture. But I guess they had to fill their single mom, ex-con black guy, smart kid quota somehow. If you give it time the story does get cooler.

10/10Must See
I was really blown away by episode 1. I haven't seen any more episodes yet, but the story launches straight up at 1000 miles per hour and only accelerates. The visual effects were fabulous to the extent that they told the story instead of being the story. Hiro was endearing in his geekiness, and all of the other characters showed the potential for great depth (even the cheerleader, who had a deep superficiality). I feel confident recommending the whole series based on just this first episode, and I can't wait to see more.
