The Flight of the Conchords, 2007 - 2008

This a great cult comedy series, but don't let that turn you away. I'm not a cultish "It's-So-Bad-It's-Good" kind of guy or one of those wild eyed young beserkers trying to convince you "Donnie Darko" is better than "Citizen Kane". I'm 44 years old, potty trained, and "Napolean Dynamite" was mostly just strange to me. Mostly. "Flight of the Conchords" is an "indie", surreal singing-and-dancing sitcom about two extremely poor illegal immigrants from New Zealand trying to break into the New York music scene. Sounds cool, yeah? Uh-huh, you're skeptical. Well that's probably why it didn't develop the broad audience it should have. Did I mention it has a ton of New Zealand jokes? Hmm. Still not sold, eh? You're stubborn, you know that? It's a riot and not as weird as it sounds. The jokes are deadpan hilarious, but accessible, and most of the songs have a very catchy '60's feel, and they're goofy. You just can't beat catchy AND goofy. The two nearly catatonic leads are very funny as they take naivete to a whole new level and the supporting players all have their own little nutty thing going on. For fans of "Monty Python", the British "Office" or absurdist humor in general. After the first four episodes I talked my daughter into watching it and she loved it. Her friends all love it now too so just rent it and give it a shot. Please! I'm tired of being the only adult who likes this.

Two curiously inert and passive kiwis go to New York. There are some clever bits, but it's all so self-consciously clever that in the end it bores. The show is fun in ten minute doses, but there's not enough here for a full show. They've got the clever dialogue down, which most shows skip and so for that I'm grateful. They need to work on the acting (everyone is one-note) and the plotting (dull and predictable).

Looking for original razorsharp wit then this is for you. Fantastic plots and and songs seamlessly blend into some of the most original and funny comedy around.
