Deadwood, 2004 - 2006

Out of the chaos of the unsettled American west, circa 1876, the citizens of Deadwood built a thriving community. To do so called for men and women of cunning, toughness, and surprising compassion, led by the noble scoundrel Al Swearengen. The first season reintroduces us to luminaries like Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane, but the lesser-known pioneers who call Deadwood home leave as lasting an impression as the "celebrities." In Deadwood, even the dullest brute can be called upon to deliver an unforgettable speech. Even the iron-fisted can be made to reveal his softer spots. And even the main title theme is a work of cinematic art. Until I saw Deadwood, I was satisfied with what television seemed capable of offering, but now I realize that everything else I've ever seen on the small screen has underachived, compared to HBO's western series.
