Summary of The Conscience of Nhem En
Academy Award-winning filmmaker Steven Okazaki offers a sobering meditation on conscience and complicity with this documentary examining the story of Nhem En, the young soldier charged with photographing thousands of innocents who were sent to the notorious Tuol Sleng Prison, never to be heard from again. Also known as Security-21 or simple S-21, the Tuol Sleng Prison was the place where, from 1975 to 1979, 17,000 people were registered, photographed, tortured, and ultimately murdered by the Khmer Rouge. En was just sixteen years old at the time, seldom uttering a single word to the thousands of men, women, and children who reflexively smiled for his camera after their hoods or blindfolds were removed. Did En's subjects even realize they were posing for their final portrait as they gazed into his lens for the very last time? Now, as En angrily defends his actions by stating that anyone in his position would have done the same, Okazaki speaks with three of the eight people who were fortunate enough to walk out of Security-21 alive. Bou Meng was just thirty-four when he was imprisoned in S-21, and the only reason he survived was due to the fact that the prison needed an artist to paint a portrait of Khmer Rouge leader Pol Pot. Likewise, then-forty-two year old Chum Mey cheated death for the simple fact that he knew how to fix sewing machines. And while then-twenty-year old Chim Math will never be certain why she made it out alive, the horrors that she witnessed in Tuol Sleng Prison will always weigh heavy in her heart and mind.
