Kevin Smith and the lost witty dialogue
I think that the shelf life of Kevin Smith's creative talent has come to an end. The movie did keep me entertained for the duration, but it is not in any way a memorable work of creative genius. The characters are bland and unmemorable, with the exception of Jason Mewes' character. And the plot is just what you'd expect from your average romantic comedy.
The movie wasn't bad. It was in fact very solid piece hollywood mainstream entertainment. And I almost laughed... twice.

This is not your usual romantic comedy movie. It's very naughty (I would be embarrassed to watch it with my mother!) and definitely not for children, but it's sweet and funny nontheless. All of the characters are likable, and some are quite entertaining, especially in the situations in which they find themselves. The only drawback is toward the end the movie finds itself in cliche-land and you know how it is going to end about twenty minutes before it does. It's worth a rent if you are in the mood for a light, funny, naughty, adult comedy with a little romance thrown in for good measure.

A very cute movie overall. Not the best Kevin Smith movie, not the best romantic comedy, but a good attempt. The movie (as with most romantic comedies) hinges on the relationship of the two leads. Elizabeth Banks is lovely as the awkward Miri, and Seth Rogen basically playing the same character as he always does, which he does well. As always, Kevin Smith writes great dialogue for everyone. I think hes one of the best at writing believable everyday speech. Its peppered with expletives and crude jokes, but so are most conversations of people in their 20s. Some jokes miss the mark, but theres tons of clever improv from the actors to fill in the spaces. As far as the visuals go, theres a couple good raunchy scenes thrown in, but nothing different than youd see in most R-rated comedies. The basic storylines pretty standard for the genre, but its a classic for a reason. A nice sweet story about two people discovering their feelings for each other, with a decently funny subplot about their struggles to make an adult film.

Funny in stretches interrupted by patches of saccharin, "Zack and Miri" is a decidedly askew take on romantic comedy from Kevin Smith. It's enjoyable but it doesn't pack the punch of Smith's best work. Oddly, one of the things missing here is a strong female lead. Throughout much of the movie, Miri seems like one of the guys. She's affable, goofy and casual about sex and then, almost magically, becomes full of feminine wiles and stereotypical manipulation once she and Seth Rogan finally, and inevitably, have sex. While there are definitely some funny lines ("Porn0 takes everything normal and turns it abnormal... by f**king it.") and a healthy dose of crass humor (constipation relief scene), Smith's incisive observational humor doesn't come through very clearly for the most part. "Zack and Miri" is funny and, in its own way, charming, too. On the other hand, there are no surprises here, nothing that makes one sit up and take notice. Good stuff, worth seeing once, and definitely a number of laugh-out-loud moments, but it wears thin in a few spots, too. And by the way, Netf|ix, not allowing the word "porn0" in reviews of a film that has the word in the title is pretty damned stupid.

Zack and Miri have known each other since high school, as basically friends and they live together now. The problem, they're flat broke and the water and electricity have been turned off. Then they come up with a quick solution to their money problems, a movie of dubious type. There is the setup for the movie - and it sounds far funnier than it is in reality. Kevin Smith really fails on this one, it's like he's lost his compass for witty dialogue and situations and tried to come up with a Judd Apatow-like movie. It does come across as a mediocre Apatow movie, but they're all becoming less funny, and Rogen AGAIN plays the same character he's played in every other movie. The story gets, strangely enough, the most uninteresting when they're actually making the flick - when that should be the funniest part. There are a couple physical gross out funny parts, but it's all very uninspiring and definitely not consistent in humor. The only part I found funny was Justin Long as the gay porn star, that was a great performance. The end is predictable and Smith even throws in a full frontal nude of Jason Mewes for who knows what reason? Can't recommend this one in good conscience.

With this movie Kevin Smith proves that when done right, raunchy and sweet can work well together. His hilarious dialogue combines both of those things and also manages to pull off something other romantic comedies don't - character development. At its core this movie (like most Kevin Smith movies) is about friendship and it's that dramatic sweetness that differentiates this movie from lesser raunchy comedies. Yes, you're going to get the d ick and f art jokes but you're also going to get some heart with your hearty laughs. Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks shine in their titular roles as platonic friends, but it's the supporting cast that wickedly bring teh funny. Make no mistake about it, the movie is definitely what you would describe as dirty and offensive, but it's also very funny and more surprisingly just plain fun. I hope people aren't turned off by the smutty aspects of the movie, because it truly has a lot of heart.

Also stay through the end of the credits, it's worth it.

I'm as much of a fan of Kevin Smith as any other college student but I can't say I found anything particularly witty that wasn't already in the trailer. This mostly feels like a slap-dash attempt at creating a Judd Apatow movie but completely misses the point in the process. There's barely any set-up in the writing with most of the lines trying too hard for any chance of vulgarity as opposed to the fact that this is a movie about Seth Rogen starring in a pornographic film. The reason the Apatow canon is so popular with audiences is the fact that the crude dialogue isn't really a far shot from what you'd hear around your friends and he spends most of the time creating compelling characters. There's really only about fifteen minutes worth of drama in the entire movie and it usually comes off as predictable and overdone. Why can't Kevin Smith just go back to making the View Askew movies that made him famous in the first place?

Okay, for fans of Kevin Smith's work you are gonna love this one. For those who don't like Kevin Smith or his style of writing and humor then you will hate this one. I personally laughed out loud at least 20 times through this and I was shocked, offended and pleasantly surprised the whole way! I have always been a fan of Kevin Smith and for many, this film will be over the top but I say that there are not enough writers like Kevin Smith out there and we are forced to watch un-funny crap all year until another Smith movie comes out. Seth Rogen is perfectly cast and of course there are some familiar faces from past films such as Clerks, Mallrats and Chasing Amy.
