Summary of You Can't Take It With You

Tony (James Stewart), the eldest son of millionaire Anthony P. Kirby, has fallen in love with Alice Vanderhof. You Can't Take It With You is a Capra-fied adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, and it earned a number of Oscar nominations and wins, including the Best Picture statuette.

If youre a fan of the play, I think youll be disappointed. Im a huge Capra fan and a huge Jimmy Stewart fan, but this screenplay adaptation doesnt match the non-stop hilarity and wit of the play. The play has aged incredibly well given the right...
James Stewart and Jean Arthur are wonderful together, but I found the eccentricity of Lionel Barrymore's family to be a little forced (probably a relic of the Broadway play the film was made from). In retrospect, some of Barrymore's pontifications...
