I saw this movie at the same time as the seven samurai. While I also recommend the seven samurai I felt that it was a little long winded and very slow moving. Yojimbo on the other hand has a very engaging plot as well as the dialog. Mifume does a great job with his acting and injecting a sort of dark humor into the picture. The seven samurai is a masterpiece in the art of film making, Yojimbo is too but a much more entertaining film to watch.

Simply a Must See
Anyone who has ever wondered how a movie can truly be a blend of humor, suspense, drama and action all at the same time should take a look at this. Although one might expect the action to be inferior due to the technology of the time the movie was made, one would be shocked to see the vividly realistic (albeit sans the blood) fight sequences in black and white. Akira Kurosawa has framed the fight scenes to show enough action to seem real but just out of view so the lack of blood is dismissible. The movie is able to transcend language barriers to provide a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Sanjuro, the anti-hero lead (perhaps the first of his kind to be reverred by general movie-goers), is thoroughly lovable. I ended up rooting for him at the last scene, whose events I will not reveal. This is a rare character that I truly loved and was cheering on, one that deserves the cheers and delivers on a wholesome movie, more so than most modern anti-heroes who either over-do it or seem to not even be a anti-hero but a hero...

one of Kurosawa's best films, this movie inspired other great movies such as A Fistful of Dollars. they say that action is the enemy of suspense and here it is demonstrated clearly: the tension builds as the movie goes on, and then the scene at the end of the film... it was worth waiting for. Toshirô Mifune and Akira Kurosawa combined equals a masterpiece. if you like westerns and samurai films you absolutely have to watch it.
