Wicker Park, 2004

Let's get one thing straight right away. If you've seen a trailer for Wicker Park, disregard it. The movie is nothing like what the trailer portrays. I don't know what happened, but they could be two different Josh Hartnett movies, as far as I'm concerned. He was the only common thread. Considering I was expecting something a bit more suspenseful, I was pretty disappointed with Wicker Park. Basically, the main character sees someone who he believe to be a long lost love in a restaurant, and puts his life on hold in an attempt to track this woman down. I won't ruin the rest of the movie by giving plot points away, even though I can't say I recommend this one... Wicker Park gets off to a very slow start. After 30 minutes, my mind was wandering and I was even contemplating shutting the movie off and finding another way to spend my evening. But I persevered... What I saw was a weak cast (Hartnett might be "pretty," but he does nothing for me) and a flimsy story. The characters react to situations in a way only Hollywood could imagine. They do things only a complete psychopath would do, but they seem like totally stable and in-control people. Nothing about this movie seemed to jive with my experiences in life. I couldn't make a connection, didn't care about the characters, and honestly didn't really want to know what happened next. Not a good thing. There were several points during Wicker Park where I honestly wondered whether anything was ever going to happen. All that waiting, and the end of the movie is such a let down. It was predictable and trite, leaving me with a bored, exasperated look on my face. The trailers had managed to pique my interest, but that was lost during the opening credits. Unless you're looking to waste a few hours of your life, or you're having trouble falling asleep, I'd suggest you stay away from this one.

Much better than you expect. Hartnett is a real actor, as is Matthew Lillard. What a revelation! The plot here is a twisty suspense plot, which we all know can be groan inducing, but if you know that going in, you should be alright. I suspended my disbelief for an hour and a half and was highly rewarded.
