Elizabeth Taylor is an icon of the movie industry, she's a legend for crying out loud, but she just didn't make enough good movies. "Cleopatra"? Please. Have you ever sat through "Butterfield 8"? She won an Oscar for that one and it's terrible. She must have slept with someone. "A Place Under the Sun"? I get sleepy just typing the title. If I have Turner Classic Movies on and I don't know what's coming next and that guy says "..next, Elizabeth Taylor stars in this touching '50s drama..." I know it's going to suck. She was a good actress though, she's excellent in this movie, but Marylyn Monroe had more good movies under her belt than her. There's no good reason for that because Elizabeth Taylor was twice the actress she was. Anyway, this one of the few great Elizabeth Taylor movies. It's a darkly humourous exploration of academia and.. um.. well.. love, I guess. Have you ever hung around that couple that fights constantly, right at the dinner table, in front of everyone, but they stay together no matter what? You have to quit hanging around them because it's too embarrassing. Years later, you're divorced yet you still see that couple together in the supermarket? They're still fighting, right in the middle of the store, over pickles or something. Apparently they haven't killed each other yet and they're still together. Yeah, well, that's what this movie is about. That couple and whatever weird glue holds them together. It's funny as hell, but tragic too. It's a screwball tragedy. It gets a little arty at the end, the "revelation" strained, but I love it. Maybe I'm just a little arty myself and I want to figure out that couple's secret.

The characters arent believable..Ive seen couples act like this, but the constant dark sarcasm gets old. Unless Im missing something huge, this is just 2 hours of plot building for a weak twist ending.

On reviewing this movie, the New York Times wrote: "Its advertisements say, "No one under 18 will be admitted unless accompanied by his parent." This may safeguard the children; the parents must take their chances." and that pretty well sums it up. This is not a movie for the emotionally squeamish. It is, however, the best movie Elizabeth Taylor ever made. It can't compare to the play, of course, but what movie ever could? It is enough that it is good: very good. If you can stand it; watch it.

Based on Edward Albee's stunning stage play, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton is, in the end analysis, an adept exploration on the nature of what is real, what is perceived, and what is deception in the realm of human relationships.
Mike Nichols (in his directorial debut) plotted out many elaborate long shots, choreographing the actors gloriously, weaving in and out of action; he also holds the camera on unobvious things (sometimes characters who aren't speaking at all, while other characters speak off-frame).
Many times we are built up to finally learning what the 'truth' is, only to have it dashed again and again; and yet, this isn't the kind of movie where you are trying to guess the ending. You are just trying to keep up.
Taylor and Burton have become more of icons for their personal lives, but truly they do turn in worthy performances here, peeling away the layers of the characters in ways that many actors would not have been able to accomplish. A breathless and breathtaking film from the first moment.

one of the most bizare and clever couple relations plot. in spite of being a dialoug based movie it doesn't bore for a minute, constantly achieving new dramatic peaks.great.

Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
A cinematic landmark. Through one bizarre night we get to realize what's behind this couple's crumbling marriage. Demons from the past start merging on the surface thanks to excessive drinking.
