Whats Eating Gilbert Grape is not the kind of movie that Id normally enjoy. Its relatively slow, set in a small town, and not much happens. But between the directing and the acting, the movie manages to get past its sappy tendencies and become quite a touching story.
The main character in Whats Eating Gilbert Grape (yup, you guessed it, his name is Gilbert) has to choose between caring for his family, a mentally handicapped brother and obese mother, and spending time with an out of town girl who becomes stranded when her grandmothers truck breaks down. Love, or family responsibilities? Its a tough choice, but normally its a subject that makes for some predictable, sappy movies.
The films strengths clearly lie in the talent involved. Johnny Depp gives a strong performance and Leonardo DiCaprio backs him up as his handicapped brother. Not that DiCaprio isnt a talented actor, but I think hes quite over rated. He proves here that he does have talent, even if his past few movies havent shown it. Depp is such a multifaceted actor he could succeed in any roll, but he really manages to bring Gilbert to life.
Occasionally the score goes a little over board, and parts of the film are slightly predictable. But in the end, its a heartwarming story thats well crafted.

This has just always been one of my favorite movies. The acting is absolutely wonderful, and it's such a touching story.

Wow, I had completely forgotten about this movie until I stumbled upon it here! Leonardo is amazing as a mentally challenged boy. Want to watch it again now!

Lovely film, one of my favorites.
What stands out the most in this movie is DiCaprio's surprising performance, considering his young age, as a mentally challenged teen. Depp's acting is also great, as a young man trying to find his way while supporting his very dysfunctional family....

This is kind of a quiet film, with a lot of meaning underneath the surface. I absolutely love this movie, and I hope that you will too.
