This movie is both way too much and simply not enough. It tries to take off in several different directions and ultimately does not get anywhere. Some of the plots it tries on for size are 80s period piece, a teen angst filled tragicomedy, and an old fashioned tale of redemption. And all the while it also has the looming shuttle disaster in the background which seems to be pointing out a weirdly placed critique of America and heroes. There's some absurd contrivances (particularly any scene with Hilary Duff whose actions make absolutely no sense) and scenes that would make more sense in a teen sex farce but at least they are good for a few laughs. Steve Coogan tries really hard to be charming and Olivia Thirlby is great as one of the emotionally troubled teens, but neither of them is enough to make this movie anything but bearable.
