While there are better movies like Gone Baby Gone and Departed this film holds it's own and I thought it was better than most people think. I enjoyed the fact that this took place in the 80's and it's actually a good story with Joaquin Phoenix carrying the movie and the always steller Robert Duvall coming in and out of scenes. This is a revenge movie and you know how they end but it's an exciting ride till the end and this is not a movie that remakes other films. We Own the Night might take you for surprise since you get caught up in all the drama from start to end. this movie was overlooked in the theaters and usually that means a movie was awful or just overlooked. This film was the latter and it captured the tension and pain between brothers on opposite sides of the law who are bound to clash and a father (Duvall) as a police chief caught in the middle of what will eventually come to ending involving a death.

There's technically not much wrong with this movie. It tells its story, it's competent, and the acting is well done. I just was unaffected by it. We Own the Night just ran its paces, didn't try to be anything extraordinary, and it shows. I can't...

We Own the Night just ran its paces, didn't try to be anything extraordinary, and it shows. I can't think of any reason for this to be seen, other than if the cast interests you. I'm just saying that I've seen all this before, and you probably have too.

4/10Disappointing
Viewers will have no trouble predicting the entire arc of this film within its first few minutes. But they'll be aghast at how unbelievable it is -- even the cheesiest TV cop show works harder at verisimilitude than "We Own the Night." As soon as we meet the hero, who manages a Studio 54-type nightclub/disco in Brooklyn, and learn his cop brother and cop father don't respect his career choices, we know that soon either bro or dad will wind up shot and our hero will redeem himself by bringing down the cartoon-evil drug lord who frequents his club. Yawn! The whole thing is preposterous and a must to avoid.
