Way I Spent the End of the World, 2006

Four stars. A very interesting look into what "the end of the world" (great title when you live in a totally isolated small authoritarian country--its own world) meant to the people of Rumania when the dictatorship was overthrown. Told from the bottom up, young people in a small town, hearing and feeling the reverberations in other locations, as well as in their own hearts. When will it be time to act? Great drama, great history. This slightly quirky family demonstrates the flair that is perhaps blunted but cannot be extinguished by totalitarianism---or just adversity, if you don't want to be so grand about it. (Extremely well complemented by "12:08 East of Bucharest," an understated comic post mortem on the events very seriously alluded to in this movie) 4.3 stars. 11.09
