If you've seen Undeclared, Orange County or Freaks and Geeks, then you know Jake Kasdan loves subtle jokes that require you know a good amount about the topic before you watch it. Walk Hard is f hilarious if you know your music. Not all of the jokes hit but they do so well for the movie. Great movie.

Mmm... Ok, but the laughs are fewer and far between, than say Superbad or 40 Year Old Virgin. A lot of jokes are beat to death, like pulling the sinks off the wall. Walk the Line is a prerequisite or it won't be funny at all.

If you take a look at the average ratings (3.1 stars right now) you'll get the idea about what this film has to offer. It is a middle-of-the-pack comedy that has some funny moments but isn't great overall.

I'm normally a big fan of the comedy spoof, but this movie just wasn't funny. It wasn't rediculous enough to be over the top funny, not intelligent enough to be witty. Definitely a big disapointment.

This movie was a lot sillier than I was expecting. Unfortunately for the makers of this film, silly does not always make funny. There were certainly some funny moments but unlike Spaceballs, the misses outweigh the hits. I usually like Reilly but...

This is definitely a mis-step for the great Judd Apatow. Unlike the classic humor in Superbad and Knocked Up, the jokes fall flat in this movie. It's slow, unfunny and Reilly, unfortunately should have stuck with supporting roles, since he doesn't do that great of a job in this one as the star. The only reason I gave this an extra star was because the songs were pretty catchy. Do better next time Apatow!

"Walk Hard" has the great virtue of not beating each scene ("skit" may be a better term) to death. This well-done parody of pop-star bio-pics moves very quickly from scene to scene and era to era -- its hero croons from the '60s to the '90s. Every musical genre from rockabilly to punk to rap is mined for comic nuggets, and along the way the pretensions and stereotypes of out-of-control stars are pricked. It's all here -- the drugs, the sex, the ambition, the ego, the marital wars, the childhood trauma -- and it's all funny, with a few out-and-out laugh-out-loud moments. Good acting from the principals and fast-paced direction help; the film never bores, like so many TV comedy routines that go on too long. The DVD includes a longer "director's cut," but I watched the theatrical version.

There are two funny parts. That's about it. I suppose it might be a good movie to have on in the background but don't expect to sit down and laugh out loud.
