Profile of Waiting for Guffman

The mood of Waiting for Guffman is cynical, clever, and offbeat. The plot centers around social relations, showbiz, and artists and showbiz. It features satire and dry humor. Waiting for Guffman is a comedy and independent movie. Stylistically, it is a mockumentary, is a fake documentary, and stars an ensemble cast. In approach, it is not serious and realistic. Waiting for Guffman takes place, at least partly, in a small town. The setting is Missouri. It happens in the 1990s. Waiting for Guffman is known for being essential viewing, an award winner, and critically acclaimed.

Summary of Waiting for Guffman

The star-struck denizens of backwater burg Blaine, Missouri, gear up for their chance in the limelight when their community theatre impresario promises them that talent scout Mort Guffman will attend the opening of their sesquicentennial gala, a musical revue called "Red, White, and Blaine." A charming "mockumentary" co-scripted and directed by that genre's unofficial kingpin, Christopher Guest (of THIS IS SPINAL TAP fame).

Entertainment Weekly
A madcap gem.
Rolling Stone
I lost it just watching Corky show off such memorabilia as "My Dinner With Andre" action figures and a "Remains of the Day" lunch box. Priceless.
