Great story from Spain
Volver is an engrossing film by Pedro Almodóvar starring Penélope Cruz. The movie centers around a family of women. The movie begins with Raimunda and her daughter Paula being devastated by the death of Raimunda’s mother, along with another surprise death. As the film progresses, the story is interwoven with emotional complexity and realistic character development. This film is well-written and well acted. I particularly enjoyed the role of the cousin Agustina. Volver was filmed in Spain in the cities of Madrid, Almagro, Mancha and Puertollano. Even more than some other films from Spain, this seems to give a good insight in to the Spanish culture.

Dear reader, Until March 12th 2010 this was an actual real review. Because the new design that NetfIix has implemented for movie detail pages removed information about what our friends rated movies, as well as top 10 lists and the ability to send movie notes, I've decided to move my reviews elsewhere. I see no reason to supply NetfIix with free content when NetfIix does not support its users. To see my reviews click on my profile picture to the left and follow the link there to the NetfIix Community. If NetfIix decides to reverse its stance on this issue, I'll happily bring my reviews back, but until then, this note will take its place. I apologize for the inconvenience, dear reader, and hope you'll forgive this non-review.

If this wasn't Almodovar would people still love this movie? I like him, I think he's one of the best we have but this movie bored me. It's a retread of themes he's explored before, but without the tension or drama or humor.

9/10Amazing
I'm not a big fan of Almodovar films, and wasn't at all looking forward to seeing this, but just saw Volver at the Telluride Film Festival and it was incredible.
Amazing performances (with possible exception of the girl who plays Cruz's daughter who was very bland and unremarkable), and an engaging story with great writing, surprising twists, great cinematography, and good pacing. It's a movie that leaves you talking after it ends.
However, it's yet another movie about how awful men are and all the male characters are useless at best and horrible at worst. But, I (male) loved it and found it incredibly well done.
Penelope Cruz is awesome... beautiful, talented, believable. Best part was that the movie actually pokes fun at the obvious fascination everyone has for her voluptuous figure. Hysterical... well done Pedro!
A very enjoyable movie.

Another strong film by Almodovar, this is his other bookend about his childhood to balance out "Bad Education". As usual, he uses strong women and plot turns to craft this sweet, melancholy dance between life and death.
