SPOILER ALERT....I like most of Woody Allen's movies. I think this is one of his best movies in years. After the movie was over I sat motionless for several minutes, I realized I felt happy. This movie had done that, made me feel, care about the characters, understand their emotions, this is rare. Yes I think Penelope Cruz deserves the Oscar for this movie, she is just that good. Playing opposite Scarlett Johansson who turned in a fantastic performance, Javier Bardem was the glue that held the movie together, each character swirled around him and played off of his character. You could hear the voice of Woody Allen all throughout the movie, He did for Barcelona what he does when he shoots in New York. Barcelona was a character in the movie. I know that this is a Woody Allen Movie, but I felt as if this movie was a Homage to Pedro Almodovar, some of the beautiful scenes of the Guitar Players I felt I have seen them before in Almodovar movies. I loved this movie and I gave it the highest rating of 5*****STARS. KEYWORDS: Barcelona, Friends, On Vacation, Tourists, Americans, Spain, Painter, Ex-Wife, Affair, Threesome, Trust, Jealousy, Photography, Two Girlfriends, Tempestuous Relationship, On Summer Holiday, Suicide Attempt, Murder Attempt, Dialogue Driven, Strong Dialogue, Academy Award, Lesbian, Beautiful Women, Bi-Sexual, Gaudi,Street Whores, Seduction, Drop Dead Gorgeous. I enthusiastically recommend VICKY CHRISTINA BARCELONA

Once we get what we want, is that enough? That's what writer/director Woody Allen explores in this romantic dramedy. Few people think Woody Allen films are just alright. You either are a fan of him, or you just don't get it. He's almost always writing about the many different meanings of love. In Vicky Cristina Barcelona, he examines how people react when they find the one person fitting all their definitions. This is one that will continue to get better as time passes. There is always something missing for someone in every relationship. It comes down to a choice of whether the characters want to settle for what they have or continue to explore new possibilities... Four stars
Cruz is sensational as the ex-wife of Gonzalo, and she earned a 2009 Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress in this role. Her character's relationship with Gonzalo is volatile to say the least, but when Cristina is introduced, the missing piece is in place. Everyone seems happy in the m?nage trois.
But, as always, having nothing left to look forward to since Cristina has everything she's ever wanted, she begins to have ?thoughts more than feelings.?
It's a fight between the heart and the head. Leave it to Woody Allen to have the head always screw up a love-filled heart.
Love is achieved by stepping out of your comfort zone in Vicky Cristina Barcelona. But for how long can one be uncomfortable?...... Four stars

Maybe a slightly lesser achievement by Woody Allen, but still better than lots of other movies these days. The three women are all very interesting (especially Scarlett Johansen), very Woody Allenish, except for an inspired Penélope Cruz who achieves an innovative combination of serious, passion, and crazy not previously seen in his women to my immediate recollection. Dramatic, but perhaps not totally realistic, yet somehow convincing. The very talented Bardem is casually very good, and makes a winning not-quite cad---although he is given the thanklessly awkward role of constantly insisting that Cruz speak in English. It seems to me he does that not so much to improve the American characters' understanding of her (they are often not even in the room when he demands it) but to improve the value of the American distribution rights perhaps since movie executives are convinced the mass audience treats foreign languages like poison. (And maybe they do!) The voice-over narration is not annoying, but really kind of superfluous -- but maybe Allen is missing not being in his movies, so the "voice" is his presence, even if someone else is actually speaking the lines, maybe? Nice-looking, pleasant actors and pretty settings in the astounding architectural Barcelona of Gaudí make this an at least passably good movie, with mildly plausible peregrinations through contemporary successful artistic angst. Oh, 3.5 stars or more for a bit of fun. 2.09

All of the characters were disjointed. "Vicky" hardly added anything to the entire movie. Penelope Cruz wasn't as brilliant as everyone thought she was. If I knew this was going to suck as much as "Scoop" I would have never rented it. That's it for Woody Allen/ Scarlett Johannson movies for me.

Maybe if you're a girl you'll love this, but to a guy this movie was cheesy in so many ways. It barely has anything to do with Barcelona, and there was very little interaction with any other people except the main characters. I was hoping this would be a Spanish Apartment style movie, but it was almost as if I were watching The Young And Restless movie. The narrating was poorly done, almost as if I were watching a high-school play. I would not recommend this movie to anybody; Don't waste your time.

4/10Disappointing
As a lifelong fan of Woody Allen who has seen at least 75% of his movies, I came away from this one feeling that its among his weakest. There's narration throughout, which might work in his mocumentaries but doesn't here. It feels like the narration is an attempt to compensate for what's lacking on screen; do we really need to be told what characters are feeling? The story is predictable until the very end, which may have been intentional but still doesn't make for a good film, whatever award it might have won. Best comedy? Really? The acting is passable, and Penelope Cruz's performance is better than any other in the film, but Oscar-worthy? Best actress in 2008? Must have been a slow year for actresses. The film is essentially a soap opera with the part of Woody Allen played not particularly well by Rebecca Hall (Vicky). VCB lacks Allen's usual wit and ranks alongside such films as "Curse of the Jade Scorpion" in terms of his overall work. Disappointing; Woody does chick flick and it doesn't work.

It makes you dream of living another life, being in another place, trying something a little different. Those are qualities i love to have in a movie.
And for those that hate the narration, did you hate Amelie as well?

I'm taking away one star for the voice over. The voice over were unnecessary. The character Vicky who wants love to be without any surprises and Christina who don't know what she wants in love, but know what she doesn't want. Women seek adventurous men, but in the end they want certainty and security. Woody Allen takes his unusual dysfunctional female relationship and makes this into a journey which ends where it began.

Woody Allen back on his game
Woody Allen in top form. A film that explores love using Allen's brilliant wit, and a wonderful cast which delivers his genius. There is nothing challenging in the plot, the complexity lies in the characters and dialog. In addition to the writing, the film is superbly shot, and the beauty of Barcelona is as much a character as anyone else in the cast. Greatness is expected when watching a Woody Allen film, if he is in his best form, and he certainly is with this film.
