Velvet Goldmine, 1998

A bit of disappointment due to some questionable script and direction choices. Nevertheless, this movie does have its great moments and, of course, great music. Much recommended for those who like the music and atmosphere of the arty glam-rock, those who don't - stay away.

A disjointed and, frankly, insulting look at the glam rock world and the early 70s in general. I couldnt sit through the whole thing. It felt as if some 90s kids tried to find the heart of a wilder, freer, more creative time and all they could do was ape their betters. The Kurt Wild character, for example, is not just an Iggy Pop-ish character, it is a blatant rip off of Iggy - complete with shirtless poses and middle finger raised. But neither the heart of The Stooges music nor Iggys soul is there. What you are left with is like bad karaoke, except with all new songs that suck. The rest of the story (and I use that term loosely) is just a extremely bland where are they now bit. Not watchable if you like music even a little bit.
