Frankly, I was really bored watching this movie. I watched it for around 25 minutes, couldn't take it anymore, so I took out the DVD. Simple as that.

If you decide to see this, do it mostly for the costumes and the set design. It's not that the acting is not good or the story interesting, but that the adaptation is runny at best and completely pales in comparison to the A&E production. But those costumes--especially the ones we see after the halfway point when Becky becomes a staple in high society--are a sight to behold. I found myself more drawn to the rich art & aesthetics of the film than the plot (or the acting.) One overtly false note was the belly-dancing scene, which was again great eye-candy, but completely wrong for the period. The music was more contemporary-Arabian than Victorian-Indian, and the costumes and dance routine seemed straight out of a Madonna video! Enchanting but not very authentic... I always feel bad giving a high-production period film like this a low rating, but there are just so many good ones these days that one must draw the line somewhere to differentiate the good from the just-okay... ~NN
