It has been a long time since i have seen this good of a thriller since the movie "Breakdown".Unpredictable plot, edge of your seat. Just what i love, a thriller. I really enjoyed this one. The acting was right on, which makes all the difference....

To be honest, I can't say a whole lot of anything positive about this movie other than Frank Whaley plays a good creepy desk clerk. The movie is chock full of nothing interesting, new or even scary - it's all just minutes passing by with perfectly good actors wasting their time. The movie is in such a hurry to get to the action that it doesn't even let you linger on the scary aspects of what's happening in the room or what happened to previous customers. Too quickly they show who's doing it and what they're doing. Too quickly they find the trap door, and really at that point, who cares. There's not a shred of buildup in this film, it feels like a first time director's movie. Lastly, the ending is so weak in every way that it fits the rest of the movie perfectly.

Similar to so many other of these types of movies. Stranded in the middle of nowhere these two stumble upon a motel where eventually on que creepy things begin to occur. However, even though this movie is like other thriller/horror movies that have come out over the past few years, I will give "Vacancy" credit for being somewhat "smarter" than the rest or at least not making all the viewers of this movie feel not-as-bright. There were a few moments where I was about to say "whatever is about to happen will be completely unbelieveable as expected" but that something more believable for the situation occured and I was suprised. Not the best movie to come out as of late but still entertaining.

I will always have this movie to thank for making me forever afraid of motels. Some people think that this movie was boring and not a good thriller, but for me, I was on the edge of my seat the whole time and nearly fell out of it as the tension built and built. What a great, petrifying film! I really wish the ending wasn't so lame, but I would still persuade any fan of a good suspenseful story to watch this movie. 3.5 stars. 2/19/09

Thankfully it's not in the mold of "Wolf Creek" or "Hostile", it borrows more from "Jaws" and "Psycho", it builds the characters and allows the audience time to fear for them instead of brutally killing random characters like so many movies do now-days. Though don't get too excited about "Vacancy" if you haven't seen it yet, going in with low expectations yet getting a decent movie is probably why I liked it as much as I did.

I'm getting to old for these types of movies. It wasnt a bad film it's just that like the rollercoaster ride at Great Adventure I'm just not enjoying tense films about the average person(s) being put in a horrible situation. I used to enjoy it but I need to unwind more and this film is not about unwinding. I still wanted to see it and overall it was a good viewing. If your up for seeing thugs attack innocent people to make snuff films then watch this unsettling movie. The extras on the dvd are viewings of the actual snuff films and are worth seeing only if you have the stomach. While I liked the film, I think I need a break from this type of movie.

There is a major flaw with this film. 15 minutes into the movie, you are forced to dislike its main characters! That is because in the movie they are needlessly bickering throughout. Luke Wilson is more widely known as a comedic actor, and it shows in this movie, because he is emotionless (When he should instead be out-of-his-mind scared) without his ability to make a joke. The two of them (Kate and Luke) bickering simultaneously is not enjoyable to watch.
But, once you get past that much, there is an original horror story, thrilling moments, and times when you really do want to scream "LOOK OUT!". In that way, this movie is truly creative and different. It's just a shame the way the main stars were cast. Their characters simply should have been more rounded out.

Don't listen to the naysayers! This movie's first half is so good, it redeems it's sub-par second half. Sure, perhaps a lot of what is happening here is pieced together from movies we've already seen--but so what? It all adds up to some of the most genuine knuckle-grinding suspense terror I've experienced in a film in a long time. Not only is the fear real, but the movie is incredibly well and thoughtfully made (look for the 'reflection' motif--how often characters can be seen 'twinned' in mirrors, windows, or water--a clear reflection of the two worlds going on and clashing here) right down to hue-perfect lighting and set design. Wilson and Beckinsale are perfectly cast, the direction is perfectly pitched and the editing, which is so SO important for a horror/suspense flick, is dead on, keeping the pacing absolutely dreadfully terrifying even when the script veers into predictable Hollywood Ending territory. I ABSOLUTELY RECOMMEND WATCHING THIS!
