"Up in the Air" is a good film, but the Oscar buzz it is generating is either undeserved or a sad commentary on this year's crop of films. There is much to like about it: crisp cinematography, high-quality acting (especially Vera Farmiga, Anna Kendrick and Jason Bateman), a decent amount of humor and poignant commentary on the current economy. But this film began to lose steam as it went along. The rapid pace will hold your attention, but it also prevents the best scenes from developing the emotional depth they might have otherwise. The clips with actual unemployed people are a good touch, but the final sequence of them, near the end of the film, is feel-good rot that diminished everything before it. The great twist was predictable for me. Worst of all, the ham-handed simplicity of the ending left me with a sour taste as I walked out. So though there is much to like about this film and I enjoyed watching it, the negatives are substantial enough to make me wonder why this film, which will not be remembered two years from now, should be an Oscar darling.

Great atmosphere
I think the movie is worth watching just for the atmosphere and setting - the airport scenes, the hotel scenes. I found the character development thin though, and the story sort of lacks heart. Still, good entertainment.

Simply great!
Jason Reitman started with the great Thank you for Smoking, and just gets better since. With Juno and Now Up in the Air, I think he's one of the best young talents in the industry, and I just wish he'll continue to make sharp and freshening "small"...

Jason Reitman started with the great Thank you for Smoking, and just gets better since. With Juno and Now Up in the Air, I think he's one of the best young talents in the industry, and I just wish he'll continue to make sharp and freshening "small" films, and not get sucked to the Hollywood machine. And while he has a good role model at home, he's sure talented on his own.
In Up in the Air, everything works great. Clooney finally delivers, Farmiga gives a great performance, and the chemistry between them is great, you can imagine them as a couple in real life. The script is good, the dialog sharp, the message is not righteous or kitsch, nor the ending.
I'm looking forward to Reitman's next feature.
