A PROPHET concerns a young Arab-Corsican whos just been sent to a prison for six years. It doesnt look like hes going to fare well in stir until hes offered protection by a jail kingpin in exchange for criminal services. The film starts out strong and its easy to sympathize with the hero, whos presented with a kill or be killed choice. But at the halfway point in this way overlong film, the viewer begins getting both antsy and tired with the excessively and unnecessarily complicated plot. After its two and half hours have passed, the hero emerges from prison, basically unchanged. He entered as a thug and leaves as a more polished mobster -- thats it for character development. As for the second most important person in the film, the kingpin, we keep hoping to better understand what makes him tick, but judging from the film alone we just have a garden-variety pyschopath. The film is compelling enough to keep watching, but squanders its long running time.

Finest bit of Film of 2009
A Prophet is simply amazing. Damn near perfect. Great acting, great story and an original addition to the prison drama genre. It strikes a great balance between being artistic and a critic's favourite while at the same time containing enough excitement not to be labeled "arty fartsy" by young teenagers whose idol is Tony Montana. It has some of the best action sequences and nail biting moments I've seen in a long time. Tahar Rahim is excellent as Malik and for this film is must see for his performance along. I loved every minute of it and I highly recommend it, even if you're of a squeamish disposition it's well worth a look.
