3-11-09. Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail actually isn't terrible. It's nothing great, but there is some substance to the comedy. I know, I know. I am surprised to write that. How can I find a movie with a man dressed as a big, black woman in it entertaining? Well, that's because Tyler Perry is a genius who knows how to appeal to his audience. I am not that audience, but I was still amused by this movie. Perry creates one hilariously flawed woman. Madea (Perry) is so obsessed with getting her way, she doesn't realize she is the catalyst for this film's resolution. Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail is not really about Madea; it is about Josh discovering himself and Candace forgiving him. There are two very distinct plots. Candace (Keshia Knigh Pulliam) is a prostitute and childhood friend of assistant district attorney Josh (Derek Luke). He recognizes her as the defendant and passes the trial on to his fiance, Linda (Ion Overman). When bail is set for $1,500, Josh pays it to let Candace out until her trial. He tries to rescue her and get her clean, but her drug addiction and her need for money forces her to run back to the streets. There is a dark secret that drove Candace into prostitution that weighs heavily on her and Josh. This movie is about working through that to finally be happy. Now, Madea (Tyler Perry). Oh, Madea. She is hilarious and quick to rage. She has spent her entire adult life in-and-out of court rooms, but has avoided jail. She and Candace live life illegally: Candace as the prostitute and Madea doing excessive things to get her way. There are many dumb jokes and unfunny moments trying to be hilarious. I think having a real person play Madea would have been better. A number of people won't watch this simply because it's a man in a fat-woman suit. If you can get past that, there's something decent here. 2.5 stars. tinyurl.com/awzfof
