OK movie, but the made for the TV movie, Helen of Troy, with Rufus Sewell as Agamemnon, does a much better job of conveying the story.

I suppose the movie didn't include the gods because they were going for a more "true-to-life" feel. However, that decision makes Troy into yet another epic war movie. There really isn't anything particularly special about it. Of course, there isn't...

I suppose the movie didn't include the gods because they were going for a more "true-to-life" feel. However, that decision makes Troy into yet another epic war movie. There really isn't anything particularly special about it. Of course, there isn't anything particularly bad about it either.
Definitely worth a spot on your queue if you have a hankering for a decent movie about men in cool armor smacking each-other around shouting about how their names will echo in eternity. Just don't expect much.

I am not much of one for war movies or movies based on famous battles, and, I'll confess, I only rented this film for the eye candy. But, I actually enjoyed this quite immensely. The fight/battle scenes were very life-like, but I didn't have to worry about a lot of gore in order to get the full effect like most war movies tend to do, and the love stories were powerful. If you like films with, 1) War, 2) Hot guys at war or 3) Rome/Greece, then I highly recommend you see this. If none of the above, you're crazy! 5 stars. 1/13/08

Why anyone would expect this movie to diligently follow Homer's epic poem is beyond me. Firstly, some off-the-wall stuff happens Homerically, and this is a Hollywood movie, folks--there's not gonna be any "talking to the Gods", so just get used to...

Why anyone would expect this movie to diligently follow Homer's epic poem is beyond me. Firstly, some off-the-wall stuff happens Homerically, and this is a Hollywood movie, folks--there's not gonna be any "talking to the Gods", so just get used to it. Secondly, the time constraints of a film preclude including almost ANY of the original literature. A FILM IS NOT A BOOK, people! That being said, I rather enjoyed "Troy". I'm gonna go against the grain here and say I rather enjoyed Pitt as Achilles. In fact, I found all the casting to be near-perfect. The battle scenes actually enraptured me, which is tough to do nowadays, since most of us have already "seen it all". Definately worth a watch.
