A dumb movie but worth a look even if only for Robert Downey Jr.'s misguided attempt at playing a black guy. Also Tom Cruise's cameo performance is a must see. Both are hysterical.

There is nothing spectacular about this film but it is definitely an above-average comedy, especially in today's terms when above-average is still crappy. Tropic Thunder is intelligent and completely stupid at the same time. Ben Stiller has the rare ability to actually pull that off on occasion, he has made some terrible movies but is always at his best when writing for himself as is the case here. There is something about him that always hits me harder the second time though, I hated Zoolander the first time I saw it but found it to be quite funny the second. Robert Downey Jr is terrific, he is having one hell of a comeback. Jack Black didn't have much of an impact on me either way, I was thankful that he didn't do his usual schtick which I sometimes find funny at first but quickly wears thin and becomes annoying. Thinking back, he actually almost accomplishes making you forget that he is Jack Black, which is surprising in retrospect. T.C. is a riot, and almost completely unrecognizable. I had no idea he was in this and didn't realize he was even when my date said that it looks like him, if she hadn't said that I may have not known until the credits rolled. If you don't know who I'm talking about, stop reading reviews and try not to look at the cast list on the left because it is so much better not knowing. I had a three-star experience at the theater due to poor sound and missing some of the dialogue, but I added a star because I believe I will appreciate it a lot more upon another viewing on DVD with a couple of drinks.

2.5 stars. RDJ puts in another very memorable performance. Other than that, it was pretty flat. It didn't keep my interest, I wasn't sure if it was supposed to be a comedy or an action movie.

One of the funniest feature roles in the movie was not even in the trailers. Ben Stiller pulls off a movie with a starry cast about making a movie with a starry cast. Sure, the movie (about the movie) has its weak moments, but all the actors get just about enough space to deliver their best lines with enough elbow room. Ben Stiller's movies are more unconditionally appealing than those smart-alecky movies by Apatow-Smith, and this one contains the familiar tricks in the Stiller bag of goodies(such as megalomania, unmasked jibes at stereotypes, witty-but-not-slapstick lines, Coen-style freaky personalities and a few more)
Again, watch out for the unadvertised 'surprise' cameo role that was just the icing on the cake.

After watching this movie, my respect for both Ben Stiller and Robert Downey Jr.'s acting abilities went up. Stiller could be an action hero- I would watch that movie.
PS: The audio commentary is funnier than the movie.

i am not a huge ben stiller fan. typically his movies include stiller as the straight man trapped in bizarro-land, a premise which is less than compelling. the exception is zoolander. tropic thunder is like zoolander on steroids. it's a sharp satire of the entertainment industry complete with d*ckhead producer. and it's funny. it's really funny. i went to this movie expecting to see a lot of toilet humor and sex jokes, and while the toilet humor and sex jokes were ever present, what i found funniest was the social commentary. what happens to a self-important individual who thinks they "get" the racialized other? what happens to a once-successful individual when they face ruin? ultimately, stiller and company provide a scathing critique of our worst impulses---impulses which are bad in everyday people, but reach new extremes in the entertainment industry. see it with an open mind.

I give this movie a 3, marked down from the 5 I would have given it because while the closed-captioning was done better than many films, there were instances where it was not sufficient to convey the humour portrayed in the audio. For example, stuttering was captioned as "(stuttering) He said he would be my friend". This is just not funny at all. Such captioning needs to be done as "H-h-h-he-he said he would b-b-b-be m-m-muh-muh-my friend".
Other than that, it was a very funny and bawdy movie.

This is one of those movies that only gets better with repeat viewings. There is a lot going on and it goes by pretty fast, so I'd say you only get a fraction of the gags the first time through.

It started funny, and then for me gets just completely unfunny for the latter half. Robert Downey is by far the funniest, with both his performance which is so great and all his lines are top notch. I was expecting a lot funnier movie though and while the lines of dialogue were written to be funny, they just weren't in their situations. Much of the movie is an obvious homage to other films, many scenes directly from them, and yet it all felt disjointed and too forced. Even the cameos of Tom Cruise and McConaughey weren't all that funny and it's too bad because with the cast assembled it should have rocked.
