Not a "nice" movie this one. Cold, dark & gritty. A traveler's nightmare, demonstrating how when things go wrong they can quickly spiral way out of control. Gripping from start to finish.

Great stuff. One of the very best American movies of 2008. (With lots of international co-production help.) Adventure and mystery set amidst great eye-filling on-location scenery of modern China and Russian Siberia. Terrific cast, exciting story. (Perennial theme of compromised or besmirched American innocence, forced to assert its power in order to survive, while wandering in the big bad world out there---to paste on my usual analytical take on things. But I just relaxed, sat back, and enjoyed it during the watching.) 2.09

9/10Amazing
I am a huge thriller fan and can say with confidence that this is one of the best films in the genre since its late 80s-early 90s heyday. In fact, its better than a lot of those films because it has an arthouse feel: stylishly shot, beautifully exotic location, top-notch acting. Harrelson was perfectly cast as the friendly middle American completely out of his element. Noriega nails the mysteriously hunky Latin traveler part. Ben Kingsley does a convincing job of playing a Russian for a non-Russian (minus his accent). The highest praise has to be reserved for Emily Mortimer, though--you can see the pain of guilt just eating away at her soul and oozing out of her. As someone who's traveled widely in Russia, this film interested me especially. At first I thought Russians were being treated unfairly, but then I came to like how some of the Russian chill and rude manners were shown as the result of missteps by the rude-in-their-own-way foreigners. I still think Russia was made to look worse than it is, but that's a minor issue. All in all, this film is fantastically intense, fast-paced and a bit scary: in short, everything a thriller should be.

Sooo close to being a 4-star thriller, but unfortunately suffers, as so many thrillers do, from a weak third act that is just a little too far-fetched and hollywood-ized. To me, the third act cheapened the realism and character development that the rest of the film was trying to achieve. It was doing so well too: a classic train mystery storyline in the Hitchcockian vein, with a couple of unexpected twists and solid performances all around. Even Woody Harrelson is watchable here, in the type of role he's best suited for (unlike his miscasting in No Country for Old Men), that of a good-hearted, Woody Boyd-ish bumpkin from Iowa. The film is definitely worth seeing, but it's not the triumph it could've been.

TRANSSIBERIAN offers enough suspense to keep you interested, but it seems to take a long time to establish the characters and various plot elements don't really add up. Still, the leads are effective and it's always interesting to watch Ben Kingsley.

A fierce, taught little thriller -- clueless American couple lands in deep doo-doo on a train in the most godforsaken nowhere on Earth. The movie starts out like a slow train, but it's soon a wild ride. Best thing I've seen in awhile!
