I have to wonder, with every Tim Burton film, what it must be like inside his head. Usually he crafts a brilliant story that helps you get lost in the characters and don't mind that they're undead or clay.
Unfortunately Burton misfires on this attempt. The animation is magnificent and the craftsmanship is first-rate. There could have been more time spent on the story.
So an heiress with no money to inherit is set up to marry a fisher merchant's son, who also has no money. It's arranged and they have never before met. The problem is that he (Johnny Depp) cannot remember his vows during the rehearsal, so he goes and practices out in the woods (reason unknown) and dances around as he slowly learns the actual wording of the vows. Then he places the ring, which he apparently always carries with him, on a stick that looks like a hand. This brings zombie life to the "Corpse Bride."
And then the story dies, never to be resurrected. The final 40 minutes painfully drag out and I found myself checking how much time was left in the film. The buildup was much better than the climax or resolution. I watched this because I loved the wizzardry of "The Nightmare Before Christmas." Watching them back-to-back, you wonder how the same person made films on such opposing sides of the greatness spectrum. Don't watch this if you enjoyed "The Nightmare Before Christmas." One star.

At only 77 minutes, how bad could Corpse Bride be? even if it was the worst film in the world, at least you only have to sit through a little over an hour of it. But it wasnÂ’t bad. On my rating scale, Corpse Bride is a perfect example of a C. Right in the middle of the scale, a movie I truly donÂ’t feel strongly about, good or bad. There were times that I was enjoying the movie, specifically the ending, and there were times when my mind started to wonder.
The film starts out with an interesting view of the world inside Tim BurtonÂ’s head. The land of the living is dark, lifeless, and devoid of any color. Everyone seems depressed and sad. On the other hand, the land of the dead is full of color, excitement, and energy. ThereÂ’s dancing skeletons, loose eyeballs, and talking maggots. While itÂ’s all a lot of fun, it does start to tire after a few minutes.
I wasnÂ’t prepared for the number of musical numbers in Corpse Bride. Not that IÂ’m complaining, because these songs along with Danny ElfmanÂ’s wonderful score were the true highlight of the film. ElfmanÂ’s style was the perfect counterpart to Burton vision. IÂ’m not sure IÂ’ve ever seen or heard a better match.
If you like BurtonÂ’s work, specifically The Nightmare Before Christmas, then youÂ’ll probably love Corpse Bride. Honestly, thereÂ’s a lot to like packed into a very small package here. But, if you generally donÂ’t care for Burton, Corpse Bride isnÂ’t going to change your opinion. By now, you probably know whether you want to see Corpse Bride or not, so whatever I say wonÂ’t make much of a difference. Maybe thatÂ’s the biggest problem though. Corpse Bride was everything I expected it to be, nothing more and nothing less.

Both those looking for another Nightmare Before Christmas and those looking for something better will be satisfied. Corpse Bride is another Tim Burton masterpiece using the same type of animation and style as Nightmare Before Christmas, yet going a completely different direction. The storyline is both fresh and classic. The classic story of love and marriage and the cold feet of the groom. Yet it is told in such a refreshingly different way that, even though you may think you know what will happen at the end, you don't dare guess until it actually happens. One area that is definitely on par with Nightmare Before Christmas is the music. The songs that are sung (especially in the land of the dead) are catchy and fun. It's really not fair to compare the animation between these two movies as Nightmare Before Christmas came out 12 years ago and the age really shows. Suffice to say, Corpse Bride is beautifully done. A true masterpiece of the art form. A big nod to Johnny Depp for his work on this. His voice and personality fits 'Victor' perfectly and I doubt anyone could have done better. Christopher Lee, a living legend himself, predictably stands out as the priest. Helena Bonham Carter does an excellent job voicing the Corpse Bride herself. Carter succeeds in humanizing the Bride and making her seem beautiful and desirable on the inside where on the outside she is not.
Tim Burton and Johnny Depp show once again why they are one of the most potent duos in Hollywood today. From the colorful, fun Land of the Dead to the gray, depressing Victorian-era Land of the Living Corpse Bride is a visual feast with a great story behind it and excellent actors and actresses bringing the characters to life. For a fun, beautiful movie that all older than about 10 will enjoy, the Corpse Bride delivers.

Burtons explorations into the weird and the zany are reminiscent of the Grimm Brothers. I am SO HAPPY that someone from our own day and age understands the necessity to use dark wit and black humor to teach children important moral lessons. More than that, he's crafted a delicious masterpiece of grim deathly art that simply is a ghouly pleasure to watch.
