For fans of film in any form or for anyone who is interested in what is being kept from them as a participant in culture, this is a MUST SEE. An intelligent and relevant portrait of behind-closed-door bureaucracy stepping on the neck of artistic expression. Where the MPAA draws it's lines between what is acceptable and what is problematic and potentially dangerously influential is absurd at best. This documentary is an excellent showing of how corporate-influenced censorship and empirical restraints on art exacerbate the disappearance of parental and personal responsibility in our society.

This was a good subject matter, but the movie was poorly done. Lots of time was wasted following the follies of private investigators, and the biggest revelations about collusion, racism, and violence were glossed over.

Not a thrillride by any means. I was excited at the beginning, when a private investigator gets hired to help with the documentary (Spies are always cool), but my excitement waned throughout the movie. At times, it is tragically boring, but for the most part, you are simply bewildered when you find out what the MPAA is doing. I will never look at movie ratings the same again after seeing this, and I am certainly disappointed in the MPAA for their actions. Many thanks to Kirby Dick for exposing the mindlessness behind their stranglehold operation. This is a film that needs to be seen by movie fans of all kinds, just keep in mind that you will be mad at a lot of people after seeing it.

I was very interested in the subject of the MPAA and how they go about what they do.
I thought that the use of compare and contrast of actual film clips was excellent.
It remains to be seen if there is any positive outcome from this.

Id rate This Film Is Not Rated a solid four stars. I expected it to be interesting, and it turns out to be even better than that. It can actually get you incensed over the MPAA ratings scoundrels, especially when it reveals how duplicitous the organization that rates movies is, how unfair and how un-American -- directors never know their accusers or even what specifically was objectionable. Moreover, the MPAA is involved in a lot more than providing arbitrary, sexist and racist judgments; its also a major force behind restrictive digital protection of entertainment and entertainment devices, and its THE industry lobby behind extending copyright protection. All of this is documented in a humorous and convincing style, with plenty of interviews with articulate directors whove incurred the MPAAs dread NC-17 rating (which means millions in losses). Be sure to watch the Q&A with the director on the DVDs extras.
