This movie wasn't as emotional as some reviews I read claimed which either can make it better or worse depending on what type of audience member you are. However, this movie wasn't anything special, it was just about average and probably would of been able to sustain the same type of story even without Benicio Del Toro's side storyline. Halle Berry does a better job in this movie then she has in a few other past movies with her in it and Benicio Del Toro does a great job as well. But the characters that stole the show were the kids and David Duchovny (who even though he wasn't in the most scenes probably did the best acting job of the entire cast). At any cost, most viewers will be content and nothing more with watching this movie and not reach any great emotional heights.

I loved Susanne Bier's After the Wedding and was looking forward to her first American film. I would give this film 3 1/2 stars and thought it was a heartwrenching movie (most of her films are) but I was dissapointed that the second half of the movie mostly focused on Benicio Del Toro's characters addiction problem. I understand the connection between the death of a loved one and the struggle with addiction but it seemed like the director or writer was torn between the two subjects and could not focus on only one. This was a good movie but I had high expectations which I try and not do but still do anyway. All of the actors did an amazing job and see this if you want to see a tearjerker but for my taste it just missed being a fantastic film by very little. I guess I have seen too many drug/addiction movies already. If you enjoy Berry and Del Toro this is a must see and I look forward to the future work of director Susanne Bier. Try to see your Danish film After the Wedding now I have to catch her other films Open Hearts and Brothers.
