Kevin Bacon stars as Walter in The Woodsman, a story about the struggle of a convicted pedophile returning to society after being in prison for 12 years. He deals with such issues as starting new relationships, mending broken ones, watching another pedophile prey on kids at a school across the street from his apartment, and coming to grips with his problem and his past.
This is, bar none, Kevin Bacon's finest performance. However, I feel that this movie didn't get as much viewing from potential Academy members because of it's controversial nature. He has one of the creepiest scenes I've ever seen in a movie, that isn't horror or thriller based. His demeanor is very mellow and shy during the whole movie, but in this scene where he meets a 12 year old for the second time, he tries to gain her trust and have her sit on his lap. He suddenly becomes more outgoing and friendly to do this, and it really creeped me out.
The movie as a whole, is also very good. I think it had a decent balance of making the audience sympathetic towards the character, but also showing his dark side so we don't get a false sense of security about his kind. It was objective by displaying the obstacles a person like that might have to overcome both psychologically and in society.

Bacon is breathtaking, in a role that took guts to agree to. This whole film has guts; what it says about Pedophilia (and by extension all other forms of compulsion, addiction, and any other socially-ostrasizable psychological malfunctions) is, quite frankly, revolutonary--or at the very least, unpopular (I'll leave it up to you to decide what it says). Mos Def turns in yet another stellar performance. The man practically jumps off the screen at you. There are moments in this film of extreme discomfort and terror of domesticity; a fear more pure than that of aliens or monsters under the bed. It is the fear of the monster down the street, the monster crouching by your wide-eyed child, the monster inside of you.

"The Woodsman" is worth seeing for its unusual subject matter and great performances all around. But it's also predictable: Once Kevin Bacon moves into an apartment across from a grade school, you know that school will figure in the movie; after you've seen him open his locker at work, you know that before the movie's over he'll find a scurrilous note taped on the door; once he shuns an nosy worker from the lumberyard's office, you know she'll find out about his past. The ending was problematic for me as well: Is he beating up his past self or affirming the attitude of those who think he's a monster and who beat him up earlier?

I saw this film in its first screening at the Berlin Film Festival, right after it made a huge impression at Sundance. So maybe it was the place and time that made me like it so much (it's hard to say like or love or enjoy about a film like this), as eventually it didn't do well in cinemas, although it is highly acclaimed by critics. It's creepy, captivating, terrifying, with an amazing performance by Bacon, maybe his best one to date. You find yourself sympathizing with him, wishing badly for him to win his inner battle against his terrible nature, especially in the film's creepiest moment, when Bacon sits on a bench in the park next to a small girl, and starts talking to her... I strongly recommend it!
