Sam Peckinpah's masterpiece. Great performances by William Holden, Ernest Borgnine, Warren Oates, Robert Ryan hell, everyone in this film springs to life. This is a visceral, violent story about a gang of outlaws looking for one last score. Seems simple enough. But the characters beautifully shaded, filled with regrets, bitterness, trying to live up to a code and almost always failing. I say "almost" because when they DO live up to their values, it climaxes in one of the most breathtaking endings I can think of ...

Promising plot sunk by leaden dialogue and Western cliches. "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" is far superior with a simpler plot, sparser dialogue, and infinitely better cinematography. The wit and pacing of the Leone film keep me coming back to watch over and over again. "The Wild Bunch" is 30 minutes or more shorter, and I have no desire to plod through it ever again. Only worth seeing to witness the two rather improbable, but groundbreaking, "bloodbaths" that open and close the flick.

The Wild Bunch was one of those movies that I wanted to love. After the first scene, I knew I was in for a treat, and I was ready to sit back and enjoy it. I wanted to relish every moment, every line, every gunshot. And the movie was good. Damn good. But the pacing, oh the pacing. Maybe I need to watch it again to fully appreciate the editing, but this time around I was annoyed by the deliberate fell every scene had.
The Wild Bunch had all the ingredients right: the screenplay, the actors, the action, the direction. After the first shootout, which was outstanding, I thought I might have a movie to add to the collection. I thought that maybe, just maybe, The Wild Bunch would rank up there as one of the best films I?d ever scene. In the end, it didn?t live up to my hopes.
I think it was the editing. The film clocked in at about two hours and twenty minutes, which was probably about 40 minutes too long. I felt like a lot of stuff could have been left on the floor and the picture wouldn?t have lost any real substance. Westerns have a habit of running slow and long, but only a few really pull it off. The shootouts and action sequences were marvelous. The cinematography was awesome, the locales were rugged yet beautiful, and the story was great. But when The Wild Bunch slowed down, it almost came to a complete stop. It was liking watching a semi-truck on the interstate. When it started to slow down, it took a while to actually stop all that inertia. But once it had slowed, the film had a really tough time getting back up to speed.

Nearly everything that can be said has been. I just saw this for the first time and while it did get a bit slow in the middle, it is stellar in story and acting (except Bo Hopkins, but thankfully he dies immediately). What makes this so great IS the acting, they're all convincing in their roles. Even Borgnine puts in a solid acting job. Lastly, there was some pretty unbelievable stunt work for its day, the exploding bridge with actual people on it, really memorable. I put it right up there with High Noon for my westerns.
