Summary of The Virgin of Juarez
In the border town of Ciudad Juarez hundreds of young women have been brutally murdered with no arrests. Investigating these serial killings, reporter Karina Danes (Minnie Driver) meets Mariela (Ana Claudia Talancon) a rare survivor of one of these vicious attackes with an ethereal and charismatic personality. During her recovery, Mariela sees visions of the Virgin Mary and experiences the phenomenon of stigmata. She soon gathers a cult following of people looking for hope. When she moves to East L.A. Mariela's transformation is complete. She becomes a Joan of Arc figure for a neo-Christian Latino gang in Los Angeles. Karina follows this incredible story and becomes involved in it as she tries to understand how this attack could have transformed this young woman. In the end she becomes too involved as the gang implodes in violence and tragedy. Based on the ongoing unsolved murders in Cuidad Juarez, the film connects issues of politics, fanaticism and religion with murder and violence in Mexico and East L.A.
