I know this film has some backlash and is for the most part critically panned but in my defense Im one of the few Shyamalan fans. Many people complain about guessing the twist early on and others say their hatred comes from how absurd the twist really is.As a fan of M. Nights other work I find what I admire the most is the sense of greater thought within his stories and care less about what the ending is.The Village is Shyamalans most underrated film and I believe it to be a masterpiece but before judging me for my opinion, remember everyone has a different view of things.
Bryce Dallas Howard sets the mood for this tale and gives a breakthrough performance like no other. Her heartfelt love is only meant for one and Joaquin Phoenix is at the receiving end.Bryce embraces her born blindness and manages to brighten the movie as a fighter and heroine in Ivy Walker.Lucius Hunt(Phoenix),however,is set to a different tune.Hes more of a quiet type and knows their are secrets to be unwrapped within his wood-surrounded village.
The supporting community is just as fun to watch whether theyre vying for someones affection with a disability or protect their town from unknown monsters lingering in the outside world.Adrian Brody portrays Noah Percy, the town cripple, and was called annoying in most reviews.Though this description may be accurate,I found Noah to act as some disables do and had no complaints whatsoever.William Hunt and and Sigourney Weaver are among the leaders of the small town and as Walkers father and Luciuss mother are in charge of keeping the evil of the woods at bay.Other roles ranging from Brendan Gleeson to Judy Greer as Ivys sister help this tour de force fit together and bring some balance to the screen.
With an oscar-nominated score from James Newton Howard and one of cinemas best atmospheres,The Village is a thriller with deeper meaning than most. Some among us live in fear but what is it we should really be scared of?In The Village youll find out.

In my creative writing class in college, I once wrote about an experiment to start a new society. Guess what? Nobody liked it. I got ripped to shreds.
I've seen films far worse than this. Everyone wants to rip Night a new one on this film. The costume design, sound design and cinematography are excellent. The cast? Some real heavyweights. The plot? A ha, there's the problem. It is a let down when the twist is revealed. I thought, "Are you serious?" All of Night's movies have this, that's his formula. You know it's coming. He could've done better.
The bottom line is, was I entertained? Yes. Would I watch it again? No.

Welcome to M. Night Shyamalan's "Scooby Doo Meets the Fascist PTA." This movie probably stands out as one of the worst uses of a great cast in the recent history of film. You would think that a film containing performances by Joaquin Phoenix, William Hurt, and Sigourney Weaver among others would be watchable and interesting. The great cast, however, can't overcome the been-there-done-that story and the ham-fisted dialog that drags this movie straight down into a deep, dark hole. The main plot point of this film was lifted straight from an old Twilight Zone episode, and the portion containing the film's climactic tension is really nothing more than the culmination of a Scooby Doo cartoon (and he would have gotten away with it, too, if it weren't for you meddling kids!) I found myself waiting for the Mystery Machine to pick up the heroine, complete with Velma's trademark explanation of "Jinkies!" Actually, what does happen is pretty close. And, oh, that dialog! Did this American History professor not believe that people used contractions in the past? The whole script contains not a single one! Some of it winds up sounding like it was written by Yoda (Such a great gift, love is! *groan*) Granted, some of the cinematography is quite nice, and those in search of a period piece might enjoy this one until the near the end. Personally, it seems to me like Shyamalan had only a couple of good films in him, and is now turning out heavy-handed dreck like "The Village" and "Signs." After watching this one, I feel no particular compunction to watch any forthcoming films from him.

Well, I am not quite sure how to feel about this one. When I first saw it, I thought it was okay, and I still think it is pretty mediocre, but I didn't really 'get' it. The second time, I understood it, but then made me think "Hm. Not that thrilling." There are only a couple scenes that get me, but even then, there is still way too much to be desired. Ack. I've seen better and I've definitely seen better Shyamalan. 2.5 stars. 1/10/09

I'm a big fan of his movies - and I found that this one held up against the others for mood and a few frights but excelled his other work in human emotion and character. Brilliant performances elevate what might otherwise be a one trick plot to great heights. Can't really say anything about it without giving something away - but it shows how this brilliant director is growing as a story teller. My only complaint is some minor details that I would consider 'cheats' used to set the audience up for the payoff. They seemed a little dishonest and the movie could have done just as well without. Definitely worth seeing - can't wait to see what he does next.

it's hard for me to write about this movie... on the one hand the resolution in the end was really unbelievable and actually quite stupid in my opinion. but on the other hand i cannot deny that the entire movie was really creepy and succeeded in making me feel scared - which does not happen a lot nowadays. so if you're looking for a decent fright you'll find it here, but don't expect anything too sophisticated.
