This is a frothy, lighter-than-air middlebrow French comedy. Absurd premise, of course -- ordinary parking valet guy gets thrown together with "topmodel" and they both, you guessed it, learn and grow from the meeting. Completely ridiculous set-up must be accepted without thinking too much about it as is the case with this genre, but it has been here done with supple, if quite uncomplicated, charm and finesse. The very pretty model herself is pleasant, albeit in a mostly superfical (but still appealing) way. All the working/middle-class characters are mostly endearing (unlike the upper-business-class aristocrats who act mainly badly or coldly). Ends abruptly -- but, then, the story really had nowhere else to go. But a nice little trip while it lasted. 11.08

This is a quick and airy film. The plot -a bumbling blockhead pays a valet to shack up with his mistress in order to fool his wife while at the same time trying to convince the mistress he is getting divorced - doesn't leave much to the imagination, but the dialogue is lively. The supporting characters, including a doctor who coerces medical care from his patients, add a real spark to what would otherwise be a conventional story.

"The Valet" is not as funny as "The Dinner Game". Unfortunately, Gad Elmaleh is not as funny here as in his stand-up routine. In "The Valet" he spends most of the movie running time looking exactly like in the DVD cover: baffled and worried. But don't take me wrong, the only mistake of this movie is having been made by the same director of The Dinner Game, one of the funniest comedies of French cinema, so it's very difficult to have such competence. By the way, fans of "The Dinner Game" will find a very nice surprise in "The Valet", but I won't tell.
