Summary of The Uninvited

After spending time in a psychiatric facility, young Anna (Emily Browning) finds significant changes in store at home. Her widowed father (David Strathairn) is now engaged to her mother's former nurse, Rachel (Elizabeth Banks). One night, the ghost of Anna's mother appears, screaming for revenge and accusing Rachel of murder. Anna and her sister, Alex (Arielle Kebbel) start to investigate Rachel, but the sisters may be unprepared for the lethal battle of wills that ensues.

Won't make anyone forget "The Shining," but it's a nice throwback to the days when scary movies featured pretty good actors, a plot that holds together and a couple of creepy-looking ghost kids. Full Review

If but nothing else, this is a fun movie to attempt to predict. But it isn't much more than an average horror thriller. Anna (Emily Browning) comes home from a stint in a mental institution after her sick mother is burned to death inside her family's lake house. Anna is welcomed home by her aloof father (David Strathairn) and her sister, Alex (Arielle Kebbel). Together they introduce Anna to Rachel (Elizabeth Banks), her father's new girlfriend and former caretaker of the sick mother. Anna begins seeing ghosts upon her return. The most haunting of them is her mother. Anna is visiting the lake house and looking over the renovations when the ghost appears, points out the window toward the main house and screams, "Murderer." It then becomes a crusade to kill Rachel by the two sisters. There is, of course, a twist that will either ruin the movie or save the movie because the interim is rudimentary at best. Anna hears a creepy noise around a corner and behind a door. She slowly tip-toes toward it and is either rewarded with a really creepy ghost or opens the door to nothing. She repeats the process at least four times. Yawn. Banks defects from her standard comedic roles in The Uninvited where she is the cold, stern, could-be-evil stepmother. She's not invited into Anna's life and Anna isn't really invited into hers. It's a classic battle and easy to see why this movie has that title. This movie is by the same producers of The Ring, and is also a remake of a hit Japanese movie. This misses on the scares and not everything adds up after the big reveal. These errors were briefly discussed, but not explained in the DVD extras, which made we wonder if the directors misinterpreted the story at times. Overall, The Uninvited is not especially horrifying, nor that reward at the end. Then again, thatÃ¢Â€Â™s just me. Others will love the ending and say exaggeratedly, "What?" Not me. There are many ways to spell implausible, and this film encompasses all of them, from the surfeit of creaking hinges in an otherwise well-ordered home, to the many common-sense actions the characters should have undertaken, but didn't. An utter... Read and rate it
