The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, 1964

The single best word to describe this film is cute. The musical script is an interesting and unique device. It works especially well for this film because French happens to sound even better when sung. Also, the use of color is brilliant. I felt like I was walking through an art gallery, theres some tone, often of a purplish or greenish hue, to catch your eye in nearly every scene. Yes, the story is formulaic. Yes, this films treatment of love is a bit unrealistic and immature, but I should say that this problem diminishes as the film goes on and tackles difficult subjects like unwed pregnancy and battlefield fatigue. So if you are looking for a change of pace, Umbrellas of Cherbourg is a fantastically different, aesthetically beautiful choice.
