Epic. Original.
This came to me when i needed it most, when I was bored and bit overwhelmed by the repetitive and monotonous themes in films, I'd seen. Definitely deserved an Oscar, but alas, the academy doesn't seem to realize how challenging work in comedy really is.
------I stumbled upon this review @ IMDB and thought of sharing it below.-----
"Ashaming that the Academy of motion picture arts and sciences has never realized what a brilliant actor Jim Carrey really is. The is no explanation for him not getting the Oscar for the Truman Show, there is no excuse for not even nominating him for The Truman Show and Man on the Moon. I like the academy Awards, most of the time it is a fair thing, but in that year it was a disaster. How else can you explain that in the year of Saving Private Ryan, The Thin Red Line and of course The Truman Show the most boring and joyless film of all time Shakespeare in Love gets eight, I repeat, eight Oscars and the Truman Show gets none? I think it is because Jim has made so much Comedy, nobody really knows what tough work comedy means. It is ashaming that the Academy is sometimes still driven by outdated prejudices. For me, Jim Carrey is the greatest and most versatile actor in the world! And The Truman Show is The greatest performance by an actor I have ever seen on screen. Finished!"

Reminiscent of a character in one of Kurt Vonnegut's ficticious Kilgore Trout novels, every human being in Truman's world is an actor. Everyone's in on the decades-long, televised prank except for Truman. If the film were only a commentary on the filler known as reality TV, it wouldn't have much to say. Those of us who love this movie have a variety of interpretations of it. I saw it as a modern day parable of what the Apostle Paul meant when he said we see reality "through a glass darkly." (Yeah, I know.) This was Jim Carrey's first foray into a dramatic role, so there is a little goofing around for his benefit, but not enough to detract from the movie. Ed Harris steals the show as the arrogant Christof, the creator of the show Truman is an unwitting star of. I love Christof's response when asked why Truman is only now realizing the truth. I laughed at the absurdity of the teacher's response when the boy Truman says he wants to be an explorer. Both lines made me think, "Hey, that could be my life!"

Much of the plot behind The Truman Show is implausible. Impossible but completely forgivable, because this movie came out at the perfect time - right before the onslaught of reality TV. At the time, people didn't know what was coming - a closed circuit hidden camera world. This film revolves around Truman, who unknowingly is the star of his own TV show (Along with his family, friends and co-workers, who are all in on it). I found this to be a fun movie, just close your mind off and enjoy it. Though it isn't always a laugh-out-loud comedy, it is a very enjoyable ride. Especially so for fans of Jim Carrey and reality television.

Even the sky of Seahaven (Seaside, Florida) seems amiss—it's dome-shaped, and a light labeled "Sirius - 9 Canis Major" falls onto the street below. Blinds, partially obstructing our view of the pier Truman (Jim Carey) just happens to be walking across, open with a mechanized whir. The customer at the newspaper kiosk, when spotted, furtively hurries away. Larger hints of the true nature of Truman's flawless, sunlit world follow: a child among a full bus of silent passengers whispering, "Is thatÂ…?" as Truman boards; joggers appearing out of nowhere, each incongruously wearing both a race number and a radio headset; the crowd of pedestrians each simultaneously wincing and holding their right ears when Truman's car has a radio mishap. Peter Weir, working off a deliciously paranoid script by Andrew Niccol, creates an artificial world of intricate and disturbing beauty.

Absolutely amazing film. Released at what seemed at the time(although not the case now,) to be a height of reality-driven television programming, this movie takes the idea to the extreme. On another note, it brought up an interesting take on privacy. With movies like Enemy of the State, you have the government spying on people, which is a common scare for an average person. But it's so much more fun to think about being watched for entertainment. If cameras followed you in your everyday life, would the nation watch it?

A great idea for a great movie.
The Truman Show is the kind of movie that makes you think. It's very reflective and clever. The idea of a person finding out that his whole life is one big TV show is genius - and very well-developed in the movie. Carrey's acting is much more...

Carrey's acting is much more serious than his previous wacky roles and he does it beautifully.

A very affecting movie with interesting religious undertones. It makes you consider (if you believe in god) that there is someone watching every single thing you do. you can't press "delete" on anything. However there is a big difference - all the people in the world aren't watching you too... Truman is a TV show that everybody loves and care about. Truman is also a man who doesn't know that he's on TV. Truman has been manipulated and lied to his whole life. Even his loves are decided for him. But nobody can play god, and Truman begins to understand that he has free will. An award-winning comedy. very clever with Jim Carrey in a great role.
