Needed stronger character development and fewer horror effects
It is certainly not boring, but it doesn't seem to add up to much. Besides a few personality quirks, the characters are not very clearly delineated, making it somewhat arbitrary who survives in the end and difficult for us to even care. (Although it must be admitted that Russell's character is likable and has the strongest will to survive.) Moreover, once it is revealed that even a single alien cell can take over a human body, the whole situation seems completely hopeless. Some of the special effects work, but most seem overambitious, dated and somehow off. Less would have been probably more in this particular film. Morricone's score is effective and is responsible for a good deal of the suspense. This is one of those films where it is interesting to watch how different personality types respond to a crisis and how they ultimately fare. The problem is that we never get to know who anyone is making the whole exercise somewhat uninstructive.

This is a over the top shape-shifter monster from Outer Space, and you're not going to get away frying this one with a little electricity. This is one bad dude. I loved this movie. I GAVE IT 5 STARS

Really? I rented the film after reading the reviews. This wouldn't go in my top 20. The concept is great but the special effects are horrible and the film generated no real suspense.

One of the best horror/suspense films ever made. The characters are believable, the premise it intriguing and the effects have dated pretty well over the past 20 years.
Crewmembers of an isolated Antarctic outpost encounter a shape-shifting alien, who starts to kill and take over members of the crew, creating a real "who do you trust?" atmosphere. An incredible study in paranoia, and even Wilfred Brimley is good! Great direction by John Carpenter (who for once, THANKFULLY, does not also provide the score for the film).
A must-rent, and must-buy for horror/suspense fans.

10/10Must See
This is, in short, John Carpenter's greatest film. Yes, he jump-started (if not inspired) the slasher-horror genre with "Halloween". He breathed new life to the post-apocalypse genre with "Escape From New York". However, this is the film which he will be remembered with.
I'm not going to re-iterate the premise of the film (you can read the description at the top of the page for that). But suffice it to say that this film basically takes the claustrophobia of "Alien", and move it to earth, while additionally making the film more human. Because the titular monster basically can take any shape (including human shape) the conflict becomes more human, as the researcher protagonists realize this and try to determine which of them is the monster. Once this point comes, the human drama really kicks into high gear.
As a warning, this film is not for the squeamish, as there is a lot of blood and gore in this film, though it isn't gratuitous - every drop of blood serves a specific purpose. Likewise this I'd say this isn't for those with weak hearts - it is a very intense and scary film - none of the humor in all of Carpenter's other works is present. However, the film doesn't resort to cheap scares. The film is very well calculated and extremely well paced.
If you like horror, if you like sci-fi, if you like classic cinema (and this is a true classic), and if you like the work of John Carpenter, you owe it to yourself to watch this film.
