The Thin Blue Line, 1988

I can't recommend The Thin Blue Line enough, it's an always-interesting procedural documentary with a meaningful historical context. Wrong people get fingered for crimes from time to time, a fact that won't shock most people, but the consistent malfeasance from Texas law enforcement should give anyone unsettling pause. Errol Morris's direction is superlative; the interviews which must have taken place far apart in time are seamlessly edited together like a conversation, and the re-enactments have a wonderful recollective tone. The features and events specifically mentioned are sharply defined, while everything else is dreamlike and hazy. This film literally saved Randall Adams's life; he was well on his way to a state-sponsored murder until a documentary film crew cracked open this rotten egg.
