I enjoyed every minute of this film. It's about: "intellectuals" who think they are above everything, going through a divorce, and finding out that you were wrong about something that you used to hold as gospel. I thought it was hilarious and interesting, granted my parents are not divorced and anything quasi intellectual or NYesque intrigues me. I would say that if you don't like Woody Allen than definitely keep on browsing.

The script and characters were, for me, a bit heavy-handed, but the performances are terrific and there certainly are inspired moments and scenes. Jeff Daniels' character is so blatantly threatened by his wife's success, and so obvious in his snobbery, that it's sometimes difficult to imagine the other characters taking him seriously at all without acknowledging how ridiculous he is. At the same time, however, I suppose we've all witnessed pompous behavior like this in small doses, and one can only assume that living every day with it could make it difficult to recognize. In the end, this is an interesting film, with terrific actors, and it's worth seeing. I'm not sure it lives up to the hype that accompanied its release, however.

This movie is almost too clever for it's own good. I felt like there were aspects of the story that should have been dealt with that weren't but part of the reason that it worked as a film was because it broke my expectations. This movie could only be described in one way, uncomfortable. And that's entirely appropriate. The basis of the story, a family going through a messy divorce while each child picks sides and acts out in their own way, is not one that is comfortable. Nobody likes to talk about divorce and even fewer like to talk about what tortures the children have to go through. The fact that I feel unresolved is appropriate, that's what this event would feel like in real life.
The touch of Wes Anderson is more than apparent on this film.

The Squid and the Whale perfectly captures what it's like to be 8 or 15 when your parents are divorcing. The younger child emmulates the mother and the older emmulates the father. This movie will make you laugh and then cry when you realize how exact the details are. Anyone who has gone through a divorce whether it be a parent or a child this movie will connect with you and it will hurt.

Wow. This became one of my favorite films of all time before I was even done watching it. The characters are so true to life, and their struggles and conflicts so identifiable and well dramatized, that one can't help but feel a comraderie with them. Jeff Daniels needs to be offered more roles like this and given more credit for the superb actor that he is. Noah Baumback needs to be given the sort of immediate credit that Tarantino was given when he burst on the scene. Baumbach is going to be making some interesting films in the years to come; be on the lookout for his soon-to-be released 'Margot at the Wedding', his follow-up to this film. If you haven't seen 'The Squid and the Whale', do so now, and get on the ground floor with one of this generations most amazing, truth-seeking writer/directors.

so sad!
This movie is sad, even tragic, but it's also very clever and touching. Jeff Daniels usually plays comic roles but here he's great in a dramatic role. A good movie no doubt, but depressing!
